A 60 year old Brooklyn, New York man kicked off his 500 mile walk across Nebraska to help raise awareness and money for a five-year-old Cozad girl battling cancer.

Jim Hickey plans to cover 15 miles a day on this walk, and has worn out a lot of shoes over the past couple decades, totaling 8,610 miles during cancer walks for children and adults across the country battling cancer.

To celebrate her 5th birthday Wednesday, Backaracks in Scottsbluff hosted a party for Paishence Hansen prior to Hickey leading a ceremonial one mile walk with the family to begin his treck across the state.

Paishence’s mother Tara Meyer told KNEB News the outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming. She says they are very thankful for everyone’s support and that it means alot to their family.

Meyer said Paishence is stable right now, and they are taking it day by day. She says there is not much more that can be done at this point from the standpoint of her medical team. But she said she is stable right now, and they are just grateful for that.

Links to donation pages can be found on the ‘Prayers for Paishence’ Facebook page, and Hickey encourages people to go to cure search.org to find out more about and donate to the National Childhood Cancer Foundation.
