Tom Noffsinger, DVM, of Benkelman, Nebraska, has been selected as the 2023 BQA Educator of the Year.

As a long-standing industry leader and one of the first “Train the Trainers” in the state of Nebraska, Dr. Noffsinger has a well-established history with Beef Quality Assurance (BQA).

Born and raised on a diversified ranch in eastern Colorado, Dr. Noffsinger went on to acquire his undergraduate degree and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. In 1994, he was approached by BQA pioneer Dr. Dee Griffen to help establish a veterinary continuing education program to assist veterinarians in acquiring further education without having to leave their practices. Dubbed the “Beef Production Management Series,” this program showed Dr. Noffsinger’s dedication to education and his role as a true industry leader.

Also in the ‘90s, Dr. Noffsinger worked with packers and processors to reduce injection site tissue damage and violative residues. He helped raise awareness among other veterinarians and producers by conducting injection site lesion demonstrations. Today, Dr. Noffsinger acts as a veterinary consultant for the company he founded in 2009, Professional Animal Consultation (PAC). In his role, Dr. Noffsinger works with other employed consulting vets to push the BQA message and demonstrate how adopting BQA’s best management practices will help producers’ bottom lines.

Throughout his practicing and consulting career, Dr. Noffsinger works to explain the “whys” of veterinary medicine and how the “why” can influence beef quality.

“Dr. Tom has driven thousands of miles in his pickup across the U.S. to teach producers about cattle handling and BQA principles. It is hard to imagine anybody who has taught more people about stockmanship, stewardship, cattle care and BQA than Dr. Tom,” said Dan Thompson, Department of Animal Science chair at Iowa State University. “He has worked with the largest cattle feeders, the largest ranches, our state cattlemen’s affiliates and so many other groups.”

From speaking to the Academy of Veterinary Consultants and the American Association of Bovine Practitioners to attending national and international cattle industry meetings and the local 4-H club, Dr. Noffsinger uses his platform to preach BQA’s message.
