The Monument Bunny Breeders Association will present the first-ever sanctioned American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) show in western Nebraska on Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Scotts Bluff County Fairgrounds in Mitchell.

The show is expected to have more than 1,000 rabbits in attendance, and there will be six judges from California to Colorado.

“We basically have four shows this Saturday. We have an “A” show and a “B” show with an open and youth show,” said Becky Ullrich, show superintendent. “There will be a jackpot.

The day will also have two other shows held by the Mountain States Mini Rex Club and the Tornado Alley Fuzzies, and both are open shows.

The ARBA has 50 recognized breeds of rabbits divided into two categories of fancy breeds and commercial breeds.

“Your fancy breeds are usually your smaller rabbits, and they are usually used for pets,” said Ullrich. “You can use all of them (breeds) as pets, but those are the ones, people usually make as pets.”

The commercial category includes New Zealand, Californians, and Flemish Giants, used for meat and fur.

The United States has a few rabbit processing plants, but most rabbit meat is eaten in other countries, such as Italy, Spain, France, and China.

The rabbit show is expected to have more than 600 entrants, and there will be six judges from Colorado to California.

“It’s a wonderful place to learn about all the different types of rabbits, and the rabbit people are just friendly. If you have questions, they are always happy to talk,” Ullrich said.

The ARBA show will begin at 8 am. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Scotts Bluff County Fairgrounds in Mitchell.

The event is free and open to the public, with concessions available throughout the day.
