The Dollar General Corporation is working on establishing a new store in Minatare this year, in what city officials say should be a tremendous boost to the community.

The City Council this week approved rezoning and the first three required readings to annex just over an acre and a half of land for the development at the northwest corner of Stonegate Road and Highway 26.

Mayor Cheryl Spencer confirmed the company’s plans with KNEB News, and says she’s heard nothing but positive comments about it from the community and the convenience it will afford

“I’m thinking probably the biggest will be the grocery part, but then, it’s kind of nice to have a variety of what you need. And for our elderly in the community, they won’t have to go very far,” said Spencer. “And then this winter, you need some milk or bread or whatever, you’re not having to get on maybe an icy road just to go get one or two items, which is going to be really great.”

Spencer tells us a second reading of the annexation resolution will take place July 1, with a subsequent special meeting shortly thereafter to help the company start construction as soon as possible.

She says a timeline for completion hasn’t been disclosed, but the company seems to be able to build fairly quickly, and she’s hoping the new store could be completed by late fall.
