A breach of the Interstate Canal west of Lingle has prompted a flood advisory along Highway 26 in that area until at least 7:15 Friday evening.
“It appears that we had a gopher dig in our bank, it definitely doesn’t have anything to do with that the rain we had last night. The canal was handling all that fine they just had a nice little rain up here but just this one area must have had a gopher dig in the middle of the night got through the bank,” said Rick Miller general manager with the Pathfinder Irrigation District.
Miller said the breach would likely be fixed within a few days after the water stops running. The breach will affect the high-line canal, but the low-line and supply canal will remain on.
According to a release from the National Weather Service, Goshen County Emergency Management reported a breach in the canal around 7:20 a.m. Friday morning, with water flows heading toward Highway 26.
The advisory said the flows may follow railroad tracks into Lingle itself, but the level of flooding is anticipated to be relatively minor.
At 10:15 a.m., the National Weather Service in Cheyenne issued a Flash Flood Warning for the levee failure along Interstate Canal. This Flash Flood Emergency is for the town of Lingle, and Emergency Management says this is a “particularly dangerous situation” and residents should seek higher ground immediately.
