February 7th, 2023 | Ryan Murphy

The Gering man charged with shooting his cousin in a grocery store parking lot back in August will not be standing trial.

36-year-old Alexander Maldonado was arrested following an altercation in the Main Street Market parking Lot, where Scottsbluff Police say the victim sustained a single shot to his abdomen.

The investigation showed that Maldonado was in fact the man who pulled the trigger.

On Friday, Maldonado pleaded guilty to charges of Attempted 1st Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm to Commit a Felony. Both convictions carry a maximum of 50 years in prison, and the weapons charge carries a mandatory minimum of five years imprisonment.

He’ll learn his fate when he’s back in court on March 31st for sentencing by District Judge Leo Dobrovolny.
