Certain factors put some Nebraskans at higher risk for developing colorectal cancer, according to Dr. Alan Thorson, a retired colorectal cancer surgeon and board president of NC2.
Dr. Thorson said family history is among the highest risk factors, in addition to a lack of fiber in your diet, not enough physical activity, excess alcohol use, and a history of inflammatory disease.
There are many screening options for colorectal cancer, but if you are considered at a higher risk, a colonoscopy is the preferred method. Another screening option is an at-home stool test.
