TRINIDAD, Colo. – After dropping the first three games of a 5-game series with Trinidad State College on Thursday and Friday, the Western Nebraska Community College softball team battled hard in the doubleheader on Saturday before falling to the Trojans in both contests.

The first contest saw WNCC hold a 12-9 lead in the seventh inning before Trinidad put together four hits, including a walk-off single to come back for the 13-12 win. The second game of the day saw the contest knotted at 1-1 before Trinidad scored 16, second-inning runs to earn the 17-1 win.

WNCC finished 0-5 on the southern Colorado trip as they lost the first game of the series on Thursday 12-1 and both games on Friday 10-3 and 14-3.

Saturday’s first game was a battle and WNCC stayed focused as the defense turned two double plays and the team had 14 hits as they battled back from a 4-0 early lead after two innings. The big inning for the Cougars was the third when they plated seven runs including a 2-run double by Baylie Krueger to grab a 7-4 lead.

Trinidad came back with two in the third to trail 7-6, but the Cougars answered with two runs of their own in their next at bat. The fourth saw Morgan Dustin start things with a single. Sianna Lewis than walked. DemiRae Woolsey scored both runner with a double before she was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple for a 9-6 lead.

Trinidad added two in the bottom of the fourth to make it 9-8.

The Cougars continued firing on offense as they scored three in the fifth. Avery Fox started the inning with a one-out single followed by a single by Victoria Wharton. Devyn Priselac tripled home two runners and then came in to score on a ground hit for a 12-8 lead.

WNCC’s defense came up big in the fifth and sixth inning turning two double plays. The fifth saw Trinidad get one on and then a fly out to left field resulted in the Cougars staying focused and the relay throws in went to first base as the runner was called out for not tagging up.

The sixth saw Trinidad score one with a lead-off home run and had two runners on before WNCC got out of the inning with another double play, tagging out the runner at third and then pickling off the runner that over ran second base to get out of the jam.

The seventh inning, though, was when Trinidad scored four runs to win on a walk-off single that saw the winning run score just ahead of a strong throw from leftfield to the catcher.

WNCC had five players finish with multiple hits, including Wharton, Dustin, Arianah Plorin, Krieger, and Fox.

The second game saw Trinidad score once in the first only to watch WNC answer with a run in the second when Sianna Lewis singled, followed by a double by DemiRae Woolsey. Fox scored the run with a fielder’s choice hit.

After that, Trinidad scored 16 runs in the bottom of the second on 13 hits for a 17-1 lead.

WNCC didn’t give up another run to Trinidad, but at the same time couldn’t get anything going in their remaining three at bats.

The one game on Thursday saw Trinidad score six times in the first and then held WNCC just one run in the 12-1 win.

The two games on Friday saw WNCC battle Trinidad. The Trojans had a 6-0 lead when WNCC scored three times in the fifth before the Trojans captured the 10-3 win. The second game of the doubleheader saw WNCC fall 14-3.

No individual stats were available from the Thursday and Friday contests.
