A preliminary hearing has been set for tomorrow for a homeless Scotts Bluff County man who led authorities on a high speed pursuit east of Scottsbluff late last week.

28-year-old Nicholas Jay is facing five charges that include felony possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a stolen firearm, as well as misdemeanor willful reckless driving for the incident last Friday night.

In court records, a Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Deputy says he recognized Jay in a black Ford Pickup at a truck stop on the east edge of Scottsbluff, and knowing he had an active warrant, attempted to get the man out of the vehicle.

Jay refused according to the deputy, and a short chase ensued that covered Highway 26 and county roads east of town, ending when the pickup became stuck in a roadside ditch, with Jay being apprehended after falling when trying to flee.

The deputy says a search of the vehicle uncovered a 12-gauge shotgun confirmed stolen out of Goshen County, and a baggie with a small amount of white crystal that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Bond in the case is $500,000 with a ten percent provision. Jay also has a full extradition warrant out of Colorado.
