The Western Nebraska Pioneers got off the deck after dropping six straight games to win both of their games in Sioux Falls against the Sunfish. The voice of the Pios, Zach McKinstry has the write up from the Monday win and then below that you’ll find a quick recap from the Tuesday night win.

Pios snap skid with win at Sioux Falls (Monday game)

The Pioneers had sputtered out of the All-Star Break, with 2 shutout losses to Fremont and 2 more losses to the Sodbusters but could take a sigh of relief after last night’s 6-0 win against the Sioux Falls Sunfish in the first matchup of the 2 this season.

Carson Ohl led the way after one of his best starts of the year. The right-hander from Grand Canyon University went 7 innings allowing only 7 hits, no walks, no runs, and picked up 7 K’s. Though they didn’t need to do much, the bats did back him up by putting up a 4 spot in the first inning. Eric Smelko and Cade McGee both reached after a single and an error, and Jake English would drive in the first run on a bullet RBI single up the middle.

With still nobody out, JT Waldon came up to the plate after a 3-4 day last time out, including 2 home runs and a triple. Prior to that the last Pioneer home run was Jon Ponder’s inside-the-park Home Run on July 11th. Waldon added to his team leading home run total with his 5th, a 3 run bomb over the right field fence, to give his team a 4-0 lead with nobody out in the first.

Sioux Falls starter Jorge Galindo would allow two more runs on an RBI double from Jon Cymrot in the 3rd, and another from Jarred Mazzaferro in the 5th. He would exit with 6 innings of work allowing 10 hits and 6 runs, while tallying 3 strikeouts. Tanner Wilson would replace him with 3 innings of work without allowing a hit in his first outing as a Sunfish this year, but would be matched by Ryan Reynolds who left the bases loaded in the 8th and left a runner on in the 9th to secure the shutout in 6-0.

Pioneers sweep quick series vs. Sunfish (Tuesday game)

The Pioneers improved to 11-10 in the second half Clark Division standings on Tuesday night with a 8-2 win on the road over Sioux Falls as they swept both games against the Sunfish.

Western Nebraska scored one run in the first inning to take the early lead and they never trailed as starting pitcher Caden Edwards dominated for seven innings. Edwards allowed just five hits, no runs, and he struck out eight before turning the game over to Brandon Haston and Cade McGee. That duo slammed the door shut on the Sunfish with a combined two innings of scoreless ball.

At the plate the Pioneers put together a 13 hit attack that was led, once again, by JT Waldon, who collected two more hits and drove in three runs. Tyler Davis homered and drove in two while McGee went 4-5 and upped his batting average to near .300 on the season.

The Pios are currently fourth in the Clark Division in the second half standings but they have already secured a playoff spot with a first place finish in the first half of the season.

The road trip continues tonight with the Pioneers at the Pierre Trappers and we’ll have coverage with Zach McKinstry on KNEB 960/100.3 FM starting at 5:50 with first pitch slated for 6:05.
