Through Grand Canyon University’s Carson Ohl’s first two performances with the Pioneers, he had earned a 1-1 record through 8.1 innings while accumulating 10 strikeouts and only allowing 2 earned runs. He only added to that stellar line last night as the freshman right-handed pitcher tossed a gem to earn the second win of the year. Ohl went 6.2 innings allowing only 4 hits, no walks, 2 earned runs, and added 6 more strikeouts. He would be replaced by Paul Panduro with his 2021 Pioneers debut, and he kept the pitching act going with 2.1 innings to earn the save without allowing a baserunner and picking up 3 K’s.

The Pioneers were impressive offensively as well, as Eric Smelko picked up 2 RBI’s on his 4 for 5 day, and Tyler Davis tied the team home run lead with his 2-run bomb, while adding 3 runs on the day. Nathan Marroquin saw his first Pios action picking up 2 RBI’s on a 1 for 2 day, and Western Nebraska ended the day with 8 hits and 9 walks at the plate.

The Pioneers advanced to 8-4 on the year and are 1 game back of 2nd place and 3 games back of 1st in the Clark Division. Meanwhile, the Casper Horseheads fall to 3-9 and sit in 5th place in the Lewis Division, 6 games back of first. Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon at 6:35pm MT, as the Pioneers look to win the series and start a win streak.
