Nebraska’s Secretary of State is making a swing throughout the state, meeting with county election officials, civic organizations and others to discuss the upcoming May primary election.

Among the topics being addressed by Bob Evnen is the need for people interested and willing to become a poll worker.

Evnen tells KNEB News the need is everywhere, not just in Scotts Bluff County, and the cause is really generational. “You know, our parents and grandparents are retiring, and we need a new generation to step up,” said Evnen. “Of course, I say our parents and grandparents, it could be I’m one of them, but it’s good for a new generation to step up, and to find out how elections work.”

Evnen says as far as a time commitment, it does involve a full day plus some training time, and poll workers do get paid for their efforts.

He called working the polls a great service to the community, and absolutely fundamental, saying “In order for a representative democracy like ours to work, we have to have elections that are secure. Fair, secure and accurate.”

Evnen is also reminding voters the May primary election will be the first one requiring a photo Voter ID, which you need to have to vote early at the election office or at your polling place next month, as well as providing ID information if voting absentee or by mail.
