Bridgeport Picks up Fourth Win of the Season over Morrill

BRIDGEPORT- The Bridgeport Bulldogs had a strong first quarter against the Morrill Lions en route to the team’s fourth win of the season, 52-24.

The Bulldogs came out in the first quarter and left the first frame with the 39-0 lead. Bridgeport opened up scoring with a 46-yard rushing touchdown by junior Zack Jeffords to take the early, 8-0, lead after the two-point try was successful. The Bulldogs added on with two Logan Levick rushing touchdowns, one from 55 yards away and another from six yards out to extend Bridgeport’s lead to 21-0.

Junior quarterback got in on the action as well, finding sophomore tight end Landon Dean for a 12-yard touchdown reception to make it 27-0. Weibert then intercepted a Morrill pass and returned it for a touchdown to extend the lead to 33-0. The final points of the first quarter also belonged to Weibert, as he scampered into the endzone on a 24-yard rush to take the 39-0 lead.

The final first half touchdown for the Bulldogs came when Weibert and Dean connected again for a 47-yard touchdown in the early goings of the second quarter, making it 46-0, a lead Bridgeport carried into the half.

The Morrill Lions came out in the second half and scored on their opening drive on a 42-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Ryder Green to make the score 46-8.

Bridgeport’s last points of the day came on their first drive of the second half following Morrill’s effort. As sophomore Blake Collins rushed for 40-yards for the score to cap the Bridgeport scoring at 56-8.

Morrill added two more long touchdown runs in the second half, a 40-yard dash from sophomore Zayden Childs to make it 52-16, and Green added another to his total from 20-yards out to get to the final score of 52-24.

Bridgeport was led on the ground by Collins, finishing with five carries for 62 yards and a touchdown. Levick had two carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Zack Jeffords had a carry for 46 yards and a touchdown. Daxton Malcom had 26 yards on four carries and Weibert had 24 yards and a touchdown on his lone carry. Weibert also added 117 yards through the air and two passing touchdowns. Dean was his favorite target, ending with 59 yards and two touchdowns on two catches. Gage Nein had two receptions for 58 yards.

For Morrill, Green had 132 yards on the ground and two touchdowns and added 57. Dravin Brackin had 61 yards on the ground and had five receptions for an additional 56 yards. Childs had three carries for 40 yards and a score.

Morrill (0-6) hosts Perkins County (4-2) next Friday at 6 p.m.

Bridgeport (4-2) heads to Hemingford, who plays Sutherland tonight, to take on the Bobcats at 7 p.m. next Friday. That is next week’s edition of the Area Game of the Week, and coverage will begin around 6:40 p.m. on 94.1 The Brand.
