2024 Summer Reading Program at Lied Scottsbluff Public Library: Adventure Begins at Your Library
May 19th, 2024 | Media Release

The Lied Scottsbluff Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” will begin Tuesday, June 4, 2024. The first day to register is June 4, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m at the library. Registration will continue throughout the summer for those unable to register on June 4. The program runs for eight weeks, with a wrap-up party on July 23, and a wrap-up party for teens on July 25.

The reading program is open to area and visiting youth from birth through high school and newly graduated.

Youth Services Librarian, Elaine Bleisch, said, “Library staff has been working very hard to bring the community a fun and enriching summer reading program. The Adventure theme has us exploring a lot of different areas, with a focus on local history and events. We will have an Oregon Trail scavenger hunt, hot air balloon décor, and an Adventure Fair that will feature city and community groups and organizations.”

The first 100 children who register on June 4 will receive a choice of a special prize: a shark grabber, a stuffed clown fish, or an alien they can stuff themselves. Any child who registers the first day will have the chance to enter a drawing to win an R2-D2 LEGO set, spin a prize wheel to win a variety of prizes, and make a hot air balloon craft. Teens (entering 6th grade through newly graduated from high school) will be registered to win a fireworks package from Fireworks Unlimited. There will also be activities in the teen room: they can play the Nintendo Switch, make a letter bracelet, or use the maker cart.

Those entering the 6th grade can choose if they want to participate in the teen prize program or the children’s prize program, but are welcome to attend events for both.

All those who register will receive a themed book bag, a bouncy ball, and a bookmark. Children will also receive a sticker, brag tag, and a chance to guess how many LEGO bricks are in a jar to try to win a LEGO set.

Teens will get a punch card for their first ten books; once they turn in the card, they will receive coupons from area restaurants, a ticket for one entry to the Westmoor pool, and a grand-prize entry. Children who read ten books will also receive coupons from area restaurants and an entry for the grand prize. Teens who read additional books will get a scratch ticket for each book read, which can be redeemed for prizes, including key chains, stickers, pens, books, Squishmallows, puzzles, balls, and more.

Children will receive more coupons and a toy from the treasure chest at 25 books, as well as a ticket for one of two pool parties at Westmoor pool. They will also receive prizes at 50 books, and at 100 books, they will receive a free book. Families should return books to the circle desk in the children’s section to receive credit; in lieu of reading logs, library staff will tally the books read and keep track for the children.

The winners of the R2-D2 set and the fireworks package will be announced at the first event, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11. Theatre West will present an original play, “Adventure to Cancel Castle”, and children will receive pop and cookies from Arby’s. The first teen event will be Live-Action Jumanji, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13. Both events will be in the park in front of the library.

More information on summer reading program events will be posted on the Library’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. Calendars are available at the library and on the library website.
