Word of USA Cycling’s Gravel National Championship coming to Gering is apparently generating a lot of buzz in the cycling community.

During a tourism update given to the Scotts Bluff County Board this week, Tourism Director Brendy Leisy said the impact of local gravel races had a big impact on USA Cycling representatives.

“They knew the competition was going to be tough. There was a lot of great gravel, a lot of great courses, and a lot of great ideas for the event.”

Leisy says when the officials left Gering, they knew they absolutely had to pick Gering because of all of the community’s hard work and enthusiasm.”

Leisy also told Commissioners the online reaction in just the first 24 hours was amazing, with more than 3,400 unique visitors to the county tourism online landing page for the event.

She said there were a few detractors leaving comments such as ‘Why Nebraska?’, but the answer to those critics is that we have more gravel than anybody.
