Shorty was born March 4, 1942, in Franklin County, Iowa, to Russell and Irene (Shepperd) Dockhorn, the second of four children. Shorty graduated from Comstock High School in 1960. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1964, and served for two years. Following the service he worked construction for a few years before purchasing a farm near Comstock, Nebraska.

Shorty married Marilou Fauss on April 11, 1976, at Burwell, Nebraska. They were blessed with four children, Matthew, Glenda, Jonathan and Anson.

Farming was Shorty’s livelihood as well as his hobby, and that included helping out any of the neighbors when he was called on and taking time to visit whenever someone stopped by. He worked on the farm until he and Marilou moved to Ord in 2019. They then moved to Broken Bow in January of 2023.

Along with farming, Shorty enjoyed attending and being involved in church. He was a member of the Wescott Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school and served in many other capacities over the years, including volunteering many hours on the construction of a new building when the church moved to Comstock. Shorty could be counted on to lend a hand whenever a need arose, and also to pray for any and all situations. He was also involved with Homeward Trail Bible Camp for many years where he served as a board member and volunteer on construction projects. Shorty was also a member of the Comstock American Legion.

Shorty enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, but what meant the most to him was his relationship with the Lord.

Shorty is survived by his wife Marilou; his children, Matthew (Julie), Glenda (Tim) Harmon, Jonathan (Rachel), and Anson (Crystal); grandchildren, Anna, Bethany, Ben, and Grace Harmon; Preston, Silas, and Glenn Dockhorn; Kody, Jackson, and Colt Dockhorn; a special niece, Ashley Williams and her children, David and Bradley Smolik, and Lilly Williams; a sister, Charlene (Vic) Green; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Janice (Ron) Sutton; and a brother Darren.
