Barbara Jean “Barb” Pomplun, 90, of Broken Bow passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Barb was born June 21, 1933, in Grand Island, NE. to F. E. “Steve” and Naomi A. 0. “Pat” Stephenson. Steve was appointed as manager of Northwestern Bell office in Ogallala, NE. and the family moved there when Barb was 2 weeks old. When Barb was 3 years old the family moved to Broken Bow when Steve was appointed manager of the Northwestern Bell office there.

Barb loved horses and at a young age got her horse, Flicka. She also loved dogs and had many in her lifetime.

Barb attended school in Broken Bow and graduated with the Class of 1951. She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart David W. “Pete” Pomplun on September 21, 1952, and to this union two children Cindy and Jerry were born.

Barb was a very accomplished pianist. She accompanied the choir while in high school, many local soloists, played at the Methodist Church and taught piano lessons in their home for many years.

She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and Eastern Star. Over the years she was very involved in Cindy and Jerry’s activities, teaching Sunday School, leading Scouts and being at all the events.

Barb’s working career included secretarial and salesclerk positions. But her favorite job was with Northwestern Bell where she started after graduation as a telephone operator in Broken Bow with her Dad as her boss. She took a break when Cindy & Jerry were small but went back to work with Northwestern Bell and held several different positions in Broken Bow before transferring to Omaha where she continued to work until she retired.

Barb loved spending time with her family, watching their activities, fishing, boating, gardening, playing the piano, watching all Nebraska Cornhusker spo1ts and just being outside.

Barb is survived by daughter Cindy (Kent) Taylor of Broken Bow; son Jerry Pomplun of Oconto, NE; six grandchildren Jess (Amy) Taylor, Andy (Sadye) Taylor all of Broken Bow, Jami (Shay) Robinson of Elm Creek, NE; Shelby (Brad) Mayer of Grant NE; Micah (Jayme) Pomplun of Doniphan, NE; and Kirby (Shannon) Pomplun of Broken Bow; twenty great grandchildren; sister-in-law Bessie McMurtry of Lyman, NE; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Pete and her parents Steve and Pat Stephenson. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow, NE with Pastor Phil Sloat officiating. Lunch following the service, followed by a private family burial at the Broken Bow Township Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Custer County Foundation Children’s Christmas Fund. A visitation will be held on Friday, November 10 from 1:00 to 7:00 PM with family greeting from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Govier Brothers Mortuary are in charge of arrangements.
