VP Harris Picks MN Gov. and Nebraska Born Tim Walz as Running Mate

Democratic Presidential candidate and current Vice President Kamala Harris announced her decision for running mate on Tuesday, selecting Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Walz not only has strong ties to the Midwest, but Nebraska, especially.

Walz was born in West Point in 1964 and his father James was the Superintendent at Dodge.

Walz and his family moved to Valentine where he and his three siblings grew up, before eventually graduating from Butte High School in 1982.

After high school he worked in Ag and Manufacturing and served in the Army National Guard.

In 1989, Walz earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciene from Chadron State College.

Walz taught and coached in Alliance where he met his wife, Gwen.

They moved to Mankato, MN in 1994. Walz taught and coached at Mankato West High School, leading the football team to its first state title in 1999.

In 2001, Walz earned a Master of Science in educational leadership from Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Walz served as a member of Congress representing Minnesota’s 1st District from 2007-2019. He also served as a ranking member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

Walz was elected as the Governor of Minnesota in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022.

Walz will now serve as the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential election.
