Spuds win ILB Title with win over Moo

Casper, Wyoming – The Fremont Moo fought to keep its season alive, Saturday night. Trailing Casper 2-1 in the Best-of-Five Independence League Baseball Association Championship Series, Fremont dropped an 8-3 contest to the Spuds at Mike Lansing Field, ending The Moo season. Casper, after falling to Fremont in the 2023 series, claimed their first ILB title in the 2024 series rematch.

After a scoreless first inning, Casper took the lead in the bottom of the second. Chase Burke led off the inning with a single off Fremont starter Zach Vincent. An error advanced Burke to second Then, Wesley Flatt singled. The next batter, Chandler Stocking, singled, scoring Burke, to make it a 1-0 Spuds lead. Matt Marsic and Elijah Lyons both reached on a pair of fielder’s choices, the latter, scoring Flatt, to make it 2-0.

Fremont responded in the top of the fourth. Facing Casper starter Jake Martinez, Fremont’s Carter Sintek reached on an error. Then, Cooper Fuchino walked. Connor Petersen followed with a single. Then, Bridger Coleman drew a bases loaded walk, to make it 2-1. Isaac Bonner reached on a fielder’s choice. Then, Miles Meadows singled, scoring Petersen, to tie the game at 2-2. A wild pitch scored Coleman, to put Fremont ahead, 3-2.

Casper tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Elijah Reeves doubled, with one out. Fremont went to the bullpen and brought in Theo Hughes to pitch. Two batters later, Kenny Jackson walked. Then, a Hughes wild pitch scored Reeves, to make it 3-3.

The Spuds recaptured the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Wesley Flatt drew a walk. Then, Chandler Stocking doubled. The next batter, Matt Marsic reached on a fielder’s choice, driving in Flatt, to make it 4-3. Parker Burt followed with an rbi single, scoring Stocking, to make it a 5-3 Spuds lead. Elijah Reeves reached on a fielder’s choice. Then, Dylan Schlotterback singled, scoring Marsic, to make it 6-3. The next batter, Kenny Jackson reached first on a fielder’s choice, scoring Reeves, to put the Spuds up 7-3.

Casper added one more run in the bottom of the eighth. Facing reliever, Alex Oliver, The Spuds Chase Burke led off with a double. After a ground out by Wesley Flatt advanced Burke to third, Chandler Stocking hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Burke, to make it 8-3.

In the top of the ninth, Fremont’s Josh Blount led off with a double against Casper reliever Logan Lathrop. A wild pitch moved Blount to third. Two batters later, Connor Petersen drew a walk and took second on defensive indifference. With two outs, Lathrop got Bridger Coleman to swing at a 1-1 pitch, and grounded out to short, for the final out of the game.

Casper (44-10) scored eight runs off eleven hits and committed one error. Fremont (34-22) had three runs off eight hits with one error.

Spuds starter Jake Martinez pitched 3.1 innings, giving up two earned runs off four hits, walked two and had one wild pitch. Daylan Bower pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one hit, struck out two and walked one. Levi Graham pitched 2.0 innings, giving up one hit, struck out two, walked one and had one wild pitch. Cooper Hack (4-0) earned the win. He pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and walked one. Logan Lathrop pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one hit, and walked one.

Fremont starter Zach Vincent pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two earned runs off seven hits, struck out three, walked three and hit two batters. Theo Hughes (3-1) took the loss. He pitched 1.2 innings, giving up four runs off three hits, struck out one and walked two. Alex Oliver pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one run off one hit.

Offensively for Casper, Dylan Schlotterback was 2-for-4 with an rbi. Kenny Jackson was 0-for-4 and drove in one run. Chase Burke went 3-for-5. Chandler Stocking was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Parker Burt was 1-for-2 with an rbi.

For Fremont, Josh Blount was 2-for-5. Bridger Coleman was 0-for-4, but drove in one run. Miles Meadows was 1-for-4 with an rbi.

In its second year in the league, Casper won its first ILB title, after a runner-up showing in 2023.

Fremont claimed second place and after three ILB seasons, like Casper, has a championship and a runner-up performance.
