Pender Sweeps Legion Baseball Doubleheader at West Point

WEST POINT – Pender Post 55 swept a Legion baseball doubleheader at West Point Post 70 on Wednesday night, in a pair of games aired on 107.9 The Bull.

In the Juniors game, West Point got the scoring underway in the bottom of the first. Hunter Weyer reached on a double, and then scored on an RBI single from Bryce Bailey.

Pender tied the game in the top of the second when Michael Cooney scored after drawing a walk earlier in the inning.

Pender added two runs in the top of the fourth when Cooney scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Ross Tremayne. Pierce Paulson then hit an RBI single to score Tremayne.

Pender added its final run of the game in the top of the fifth when Braxton scored on an RBI double by Cooney.

West Point scored one more time in the bottom of the sixth after Even Schuetze reached on a base hit and then socred on an RBI from Gavin Kreikemeier.

The game was called after six innings due to the time limit, making Pender the 4-2 winner.

Spencer Rabbass was the winning pitcher, going all six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out three.

Hunter Weyer took the loss on the mound, throwing 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, four walks and a hit batter,, while striking out seven. Colten Haber threw 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits with three strike outs.

Pender broke open a pitcher’s duel in the top of the sixth inning to win the Seniors game 4-0.

The game was scoreless through five complete innings before Caleb Trimble, Nathan Breitbarth and Lucas Vogt all scored in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead.

They added a run in the top of the seventh as well.

West Point threatened in the bottom of the seventh after putting the first two batters on base to start the inning, but the next three batters then struck out to end the game.

Brendan Rief took the loss on the mound, throwing six complete innings, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks with six strike outs. Keegan Doggett pitched the seventh innings, allowing the one run on two walks with a strike out and a hit batter.

Zach Hegge pitched a gem for Pender, throwing a complete game shut out, surrendering just four hits and two walks while striking out 11.

Next up, West Point travels to Columbus Lakeview on Monday, June 21, while Pender is at Hartington.
