WAYNE – The North Bend Central Boys and Girls Basketball Teams met Wayne for a Doubleheader in Wayne in action aired on 107.9 the Bull Thursday night.

It was the Tigers using a big 3rd quarter to pull away for a 58-39 win in the girls game while the Blue Devils won the boys game 50-48 on a shot at the buzzer.

In the girls game, North Bend Central led 13-4 late in the 1st quarter when Frantzdie Barner nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer to pull Wayne within 6 at 13-7 at the end of one.

The Tigers won the 2nd quarter 17-15 to take a 30-22 lead into the locker room.

North Bend Central outscored the Blue Devils 17-6 in the 3rd quarter to push the lead up to 19 at 47-28 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 11 points in the 4th quarter.

One of the biggest differences in the game was turnovers as the Tigers created numerous fast break opportunities for themselves off turnovers throughout the contest.

Kaitlyn Emanuel had a team-high 15 points for North Bend Central while Sydney Emanuel and Lindsey Emanuel were also both in double figures with 13 and 11, respectively.

Wayne’s Rubie Klausen led all scorers with 17 points while Brooklyn Kruse totaled 14.

The Tigers improve to 11-1 on the season and are scheduled to host Fremont Bergan on Saturday while the Blue Devils fall to 7-8 on the year and are scheduled to host Norfolk Catholic Friday night.

The boys game was an instant classic that went down to the wire as Wayne jumped out to an 8-2 first quarter lead only to see North Bend Central go on a 9-0 run to end the quarter and lead 11-8 at the end of one.

The Tigers held a 24-20 lead late in the 2nd quarter only to see the Blue Devils go on a mini 5-0 run to go up 25-24 at halftime.

North Bend Central came on strong in the 3rd quarter, and led 37-29 late in the quarter and 37-31 at the end of three.

That all would set the stage for the 4th quarter that saw the Tigers lead 42-35 before Wayne came all the way back and tied it.

North Bend Central regained the lead at 44-42 before the Blue Devils hit a 3 to go up 45-44.

After Wayne’s Tanner Walling missed the front end of a 1-and-1…. the Tigers’ Kyler Hellbusch knocked down two free throws to put North Bend Central ahead once again at 46-45.

The Blue Devils responded once again as Carter Junck nailed a 3-pointer to put Wayne back on top 48-46.

North Bend Central had an answer once again though as Travis Byrd scored on a put back with 11.6 seconds left to tie the game at 48.

Wayne had the final answer of the night, however, as Walling drove the length of the floor to the basket and banked it home from the right block as time expired, giving the Blue Devils the 50-48 win.

Hellbusch had 15 points to lead the way for the Tigers while Austin Endorf totaled 11. Trevor Ortmeier added 9 while Byrd notched 7.

Walling had a team-high 15 points for Wayne while Brandon Bartos was also in double figures with 12. Junck chipped in 7.
