SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — The 15th-ranked Morningside University women’s volleyball team took the Dordt Defenders to five sets, but the Defenders held on to beat the Mustangs in five sets on Wednesday.
The Defenders won by set scores of 25-14, 25-18, 18-25, 23-25 and 15-9.
Morningside’s best set offensively was in the third, when it hit .400. The Mustangs (11-4, 0-2) had 12 kills in that set, and just two errors.
The Mustangs’ largest lead in the third set was 22-15, when Jacey Miller earned a kill assisted by Kyla Dyrstad. Miller also had the kill that gave her team the 24th point, and Morningside got the set on a Defenders hitting error.
In the fourth set, Sydney Marlow earned the eventual go-ahead kill that gave the Mustangs the 19-18 set. Claire Wilson also had two kills toward the end of the victorius set.
Marlow led the Mustangs with 14 kills, while Wilson had 11. Miller had eight kills.
Dyrstad and Aleksandra Dalach were the top two setters wtih 22 and 20 assists.
Defensively, Aureana Bernales led with 18 digs, while Marlow had 11.
