Iowa State Women lose to LSU

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – No. 14 Iowa State (7-1) dropped its first game of the season at LSU (6-1), 69-60, in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The Cyclones struggled offensively, scoring a season-low 60 points in the loss, while LSU went 7-of-10 from long range.

Ashley Joens led Iowa State with 24 points off an efficient 8-of-12 shooting, while hauling in eight boards. Emily Ryan tied her season-high with 13 points, while Lexi Donarski rounded out the Cyclones in double figures with 10 points.

How It Happened
The Tigers started off hot, shooting a blistering 64.3 percent in the first quarter, jumping out to as much as a nine-point lead. Despite the nine-point deficit, ISU would rally with five-straight points in the last 48 seconds of the quarter to pull within four of the Tigers, 24-20. Iowa State was further plagued by foul trouble with three different Cyclones with two fouls in the first 10 minutes of action.

All-American Ashley Joens took over in the second quarter, scoring the first eight points for the Cyclones and giving ISU its first lead of the night, 28-27, off a pair of freebies. Iowa State would end the quarter with three-straight turnovers as the Tigers would capitalize to take a six-point lead into the half, 38-32, marking the first halftime deficit of the season for ISU. Ashley Joens paced the Cyclones in the first half with 15 points off 5-of-7 shooting.

In the third quarter, the Cyclones and Tigers continued the battle, but an 8-0 LSU run would push the Tigers to their largest lead of the game, 56-44, and ISU’s largest deficit of the season,. before and Emily Ryan triple brought the Cyclones back within single digits. Ryan would score eight of the Cyclones 16 points in the third quarter, but the Cyclones would trail LSU 56-48 heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Cyclones would get within three in the early goings in the fourth quarter after a 3-pointer by Ashley Joens, 56-53. However, LSU would not let the Cyclones inch any closer, outscoring Iowa State, 13-7, the rest of the way handing ISU their first loss of the season.

Player of Note
Ashley Joens finished the game with 24-points for her fourth 20-point performance of the season. Joens also connected on four of the Cyclones’ nine triples.
