Gering’s Director of Public Works Pat Heath says residents need to be watching for issues on or around their property that could be a sign of leaking water lines that can cause problems for them and the city.

Heath says they have had an above average number of water line leaks this spring, including problems with a water main and service lines running from a home on a street south of the high school.

Heath says. “I estimate we have $20,000 in street damage from a water main break in the 1900 block of 20th Street.  And there was some settlement to a resident’s driveway, their sidewalk and porch and there is some settlement on the foundation, the basement wall of their house.”

Heath says if you see one area of your yard growing faster than the other areas or settlement issues in the street or your property’s yard, a call to the city to see if there is a leak would be a good idea. Heath says many of the problems have come from a thinner cooper service line that was used in the 1970’s in certain areas that is now is at the end of its life.

He says the city has also had problems on 5th Street in the H and I Street area, where the soil is corroding the water main and a project to replace that main is scheduled for next year.
