Gale: election issues in other states could lead to more reforms

After a contentious general election, changes to federal and some state election processes wouldn’t be a surprise according to Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale.

Gale says Florida might be a bellwether for additional voting reforms, as it was during the 2000 presidential election where ‘hanging chads’ and other irregularities prompted federal election reforms and nationwide voting system upgrades.

However, Gale says it’s notable that Florida is not the only state experiencing issues.”In Georgia, for example, the Secretary of State was deeply involved in running that election, but he was also running for governor in a very close race,” says Gale, “Kris Kolbach in Kansas was the same situation. Now, what the answer to that is, I’m not sure.”

Gale tells KNEB News it’s possible some states will start to move toward using election commissions to oversee political contests instead of elected officials.
