York College men fall to Bethel

North Newton, KAN – York College shot just 10% from beyond the arc and just 37% from the free throw line as they fell on the road 84-74. York squandered a 13-point first half lead and went 0-for-10 from deep in the second half.

York led for all of the first half and the first seven minutes of the second half. However, the Threshers stayed in the game and climbed back from a late 13-point first half deficit to just seven at the break. The two teams seemed to go back and forth the first five minutes of the second half before Bethel College seemed to pick up steam a technical foul was called on Mark Dean (SR/Denver, Colo) with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game. Bethel converted both free throws and went on a 12-2 run to take their first lead since the 19:09 mark of the first half. York tried to battle back but the offense went cold. As the Panthers were in striking distance they went 0-for-6 from the free throw line and their deficit grew to seven. The Threshers kept the Panthers at bay and converted on their free throws late in the game to upset the Panthers.

Chris Smith (JR/Dallas, Texas) led the Panthers with 16 points and four assists. Aaron Munday-Rashid (SO/Melbourne, Australia) added 12 points and nine rebounds off of the bench. Michael Johnson (SR/Orlando, Fla) was the only other Panther to score in double figures with 10.

Bethel’s bench was the difference in the game as they scored 43 points to 26 by the Panthers. They also converted on 18 free throws, while York was only able to convert six.

York falls to 8-8 on the season and will have a tough matchup at home as they host the University of St. Mary on Saturday afternoon with a 4:00 p.m. start.
