WNCC tops Sheridan in battle of Top 25 teams

WNCC tops Sheridan in battle of Top 25 teams

WILLISTON, N.D. – In a battle Top 25 ranked teams, the No. 16 Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team received 26 points from Jervay Green and held No. 24 Sheridan College to just 42 second-half points in earning a 101-88 win over the Generals Friday in Williston, North Dakota.

The win was the Cougars eighth straight victory. WNCC is now 11-2 on the season.

Sheridan, who entered the contest at 11-0, lost its first contest of the season. It was also the first time the Generals have scored less than 90 points all season.

The contest, however, was tight for a spell. Sheridan held its largest lead of the game of nine points with 7:44 left in the first half. WNCC rebounded from the deficit and led at intermission 52-46.

The second half was a battle. WNCC had its biggest lead of the game of 16 points with 5:50 to play and never looked back after that.

Both teams shot the ball well. WNCC shot 55 percent from the field, while connecting on 15 of 33 3-pointers. WNCC buried 10 3-pointers in the first half. Sheridan shot 49 percent with eight 3-pointers.

WNCC had all five starters finish with double figures. Green, the University of Nebraska recruit, tallied 26 points. Green also buried three treys, while pulling down six rebounds while dishing off five assists.

Kuxhausen followed with 19 points, while Henry Tanksley had 17. Kuxhausen buried three 3-pointers while dishing off five assists, while Tanksley had four treys.

Bryce Sanchious, who finished with 34 points on Thursday in a win, tallied 17 points and eight assists, while Martin Roub had 17 points and seven boards.

Sheridan held the rebound advantage 37-34, but WNCC recorded five blocked shots. Tanksley had two blocks while Sanchious, Green, and Roub each had one.

WNCC will wrap up the first semester next week with three games. The Cougars host Laramie County Community College on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Cougars will then travel to Ottumwa, Iowa to face Division I, No. 17 ranked Indian Hills Community College on Friday and then Division II, No. 17 ranked Iowa Lakes Community College on Saturday.
