RIVERTON, Wyo. – In a battle of top 15 ranked teams, the No. 14 Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team received 29 points from Jervay Green in registering a 105-102 win over No. 3 College of Southern Idaho on Friday at Riverton, Wyoming.

It was the second straight night that WNCC has scored over the century mark after topping Central Wyoming College 111-106.

WNCC coach Cory Fehringer was proud of his players effort in capturing wins on the road in the team’s opening season games.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to travel with our boys over the weekend with two difficult games on the road,” he said. “One win was over a team protecting home court in the season opener and another who is coming off a national championship caliber season. One factor remained the same and it would take resilience to be successful in either competition.

“I am proud of our team for their continued growth and happy to be headed home. From top to bottom, it was unlikely to come out on top without each and every player in the locker room.”

What won the contest for the Cougars was a strong defensive effort in the second have. In the first half, the Cougars and Golden Eagles combined for 24 3-pointers with each team making 12. CSI held a 64-58 lead at intermission.

The second half was a different style of game as WNCC clamped down on defense, holding the No. 3 team in the nation to just 38 points and just three treys. WNCC, on the other hand, scored 47 points and four treys.

The big difference in the second half was free throw shooting. WNCC converted 15 of 22 charity shots while CSI was just 1 of 2.

The Cougars also tallied 16 steals to just seven for the Golden Eagles.

WNCC put five players in double figures for the win. Green led the Cougars with 29 points, including four 3-pointers and going 9 of 13 from the charity stripe. Green also pulled down six rebounds, dished off five assists, and had three steals.

Also collecting double-digits was Martin Roub with 22 points. Roub had three 3-pointers and led the team with seven boards. Bryce Sanchious finished with 19 points with four treys, while Henry Tanksley had 17 points with four 3-pointers. Elie Cadat had 11 points in the win.

CSI was led by Roberto Gitten with 31 points, including eight 3-pointers.

WNCC, 2-0, will be back at home for a series of home contests beginning Wednesday when they host Colby Community College at 6 p.m. The Cougars will then host the Region 9/18 Classic when Southern Idaho and Salt Lake Community College come to Cougar Palace to face WNCC and Casper.
