Wayne State Women win at Quincy

Five Wayne State players scored in double figures as the Wildcats held off Quincy University 69-62 Saturday afternoon at the Subway Tip Off Classic Women’s Basketball Tournament played at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois. WSC is now 3-1 with the win while the host Hawks drop to 0-4.

Wayne State held the lead for most of the first quarter until the host Hawks to a one-point lead (17-16) after the opening 10 minutes of play.

The ‘Cats held a 10-5 lead with just over 5:00 to play in the quarter following an Erin Norling 3-pointer. But Quincy scored the final five points of the quarter to take a 17-16 lead entering the second quarter.

The second quarter was just the opposite as Quincy held the lead for much of the quarter until WSC had a scoring surge to end the quarter to take a 29-28 lead at intermission.

The Hawks built their biggest lead of the game at 28-23 with 4:26 to play, then WSC closed the half with a Norling layup and a jumper and pair of free throws from Haley Vesey to grab a 29-28 advantage at intermission.

WSC used a strong third quarter, outscoring Quincy 25-17, to take the lead for good.

After Quincy scored the first basket of the second half for a 30-29 lead, the Wildcats scored the next six points to take the lead for good. An Andrea Larson three-point play along with a Halley Busse layup and free throw putting the ‘Cats ahead 35-30.

The Hawks got within one at 37-36 at the 4:53 mark, but WSC scored 10 points in the next 90 seconds to take a 47-38 lead with the Wildcats taking their first double-digit lead at 52-42 on a Norling trey with 1:12 remaining in the quarter before finishing the third with a 54-47 lead.

Quincy rallied in the fourth quarter, going on a 10-2 run, to get within two at 56-54 at the 5:59 mark. A 3-pointer from Vesey temporarily stopped the scoring spurt putting the ‘Cats up 59-54 and Quincy could only get as close as four (62-58) the rest of the way as the Wildcats fought off the final charge from the host Hawks for the victory.

Halley Basse paced a balanced scoring attack for Wayne State with 17 points. Senior guard Maggie Lowe followed with 15 points while sophomore forward Erin Norling produced 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots. Sophomore reserve guard Haley Vesey added 12 points with senior forward Andrea Larson scoring 10.

Wayne State finished the game making 23 of 61 shots for 37.7 percent. The ‘Cats were 8 of 21 from the 3-point line and 15 of 21 (71.4%) at the charity stripe.

For Quincy, Maddie Spagnola and Aleksandra Petrovic each scored 14 points with Jessica Merino adding 11.

Quincy was 22 of 64 (34.4%) from the field and 9 of 29 behind the 3-point line to go with 9 for 15 at the free throw line.

The host Hawks out-rebounded WSC 42-32 despite a team-high eight boards from Norling.

Wayne State will host Peru State College Saturday at 4 p.m.
