Wayne State Men defeat Mount Marty

All five starters reached double figures as Wayne State College topped Mount Marty 75-57 in a non-conference men’s basketball game played Saturday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC is now 4-1 with the win while MMC is 3-7 as the game was an exhibition contest for the NAIA Lancers.

With WSC leading 10-9 at the 15:48 mark of the first half, the Wildcats went on a 12-2 run to take a 22-11 lead following a layup from Al’Tavius Jackson.

The ‘Cats pushed the lead to 33-14 on a Nick Ferrarini 3-pointer at the 5:13 mark and finished the first half with a 40-24 lead at intermission.

Wayne State maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game, but the Lancers made a pair of runs at the Wildcats to cut the deficit to 12 before finishing with the 75-58 win.

With WSC leading 48-30, Mount Marty scored six straight points and got within 48-36 on a Logan Fleming layup with 14:50 remaining.

The Wildcats responded and took their biggest lead of the night at 22 points (64-42) on a Trevin Joseph layup at the 7:51 mark.

Mount Marty made one more surge on the Wildcats, getting within 12 at 66-54 on a Jonah Larson jumper with 4:39 to play.

WSC then put the game out of reach with a 9-1 run to increase the lead back to 20 points at 75-55.

All five WSC starters scored in double figures, led by freshman forward Jordan Janssen with 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Senior guard Trevin Joseph added 15 points followed by freshman Nick Ferrarini with 11 and seniors Kendall Jacks and Vance Janssen with 10 apiece.

Wayne State shot over 50 percent for the fourth time in five games this season, making 31 of 59 shots for 52.5 percent. The ‘Cats were 5 of 21 from 3-point range and 8 for 11 at the free throw line.

Colby Johnson was the lone Mount Marty player in double figures scoring 18 for the Lancers.

MMC made 22 of 57 shots from the field for 38.6 percent, including 5 for 22 behind the arc and 9 of 15 at the free throw line.

Wayne State held a 38-28 edge in rebounding over MMC thanks to eight boards by Jordan Janssen and seven caroms from Al’Tavius Jackson.

Jackson and Vance Janssen each had four assists for WSC while Jordan Janssen, Jackson and Ben Dentlinger each were credited with two blocked shots.

Wayne State closes out a four-game home stand Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. hosting Nebraska-Kearney.
