Panthers pick up first KCAC win in five-set thriller over Avila

Panthers pick up first KCAC win in five-set thriller over Avila

YORK – York College rallied back in the deciding set to win their first KCAC match of the season 25-22, 13-25, 25-22, 19-25, 16-14. The Panthers jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set before Avila went on a 8-3 run to take the lead 10-9. Back and forth play had the Eagles ahead 13-12 before York turned it up. Kayli Riesgo(JR/Tuscan, Ariz) tied the game as she two the second touch for the Panthers over the net for a surprise kill. Molly Little (JR/Billings, Mont) then pounded down her 15th kill of the match for the 14-13 lead. After the Eagles tied it at 14, a service error by the Eagles gave the Panthers a 15-14 advantage. On the serve by Natalie Carrasco(SR/Moreno Valley, Calif) the Panthers were able to get the ball back on their side where Shiloh Lively (FR/Las Vegas, Nev) knocked down Deborah Kurtzer(SR/Haxtun, Colo)’s pass for the kill.

York took game one 25-22, but it was all Avila in game two as they won 25-13. The Panthers bounced back in the third game to claim the advantage 25-22, but the fourth game went the way of the visitors as they forced the deciding fifth set with a 25-19 win.

York was led by Molly Little‘s 15 kills, as she had just one misfire for a .412 hitting percentage. Rose Tafaoialii (SO/Magna, Utah) was the other Panther to reach double digits in kills with 10. Haley Scoffield (JR/Casper, Wyo) added nine with, Lively right behind with seven. Kaylie Riesgo had 44 assist, along with 15 digs. Kurtzer led the team with 24 digs. Carrasco and Katie Bell (SR/Hastings, Neb) had double digit digs with 12 and 10, respectively.

Scoffield was solid at the net defensively as well as she captured five blocks.

York will travel to Leavenworth, Kansas on Wednesday for a matchup against the University of Saint Mary before coming back home for a Saturday afternoon home stand with Bethany College.
