OVERTON – It was a #4 seed hosting a #5 seed and it was the Overton Eagles holding onto a close game over Sandhills-Thedford, 30-24. The Knights claimed the lead initially as Cauy Pokorny scored from 20 yards out on a Bryan Zutavern pass making it 8-0. Braden Kizer answered for the Eagles and at the end of the first quarter on a two-yard run and it was 8-6 in favor of the Knights.
Overton took a lead on a Kizer 5-yard touchdown run making it 14-8 with the Eagles ahead. Sandhills-Thedford answered with a 67-yard touchdown run from Coy Pokorny and at halftime, it was tied at 14.
Kizer punched it in for the Eagles on the first drive after the intermission making it 22-14. Sandhills-Thedford made things interesting as they forced a safety and heading into the fourth it was 22-16 with Overton leading.
But, the Eagles scored on an 11-yard touchdown from Ryan Lauby making it 30-16. Again, Sandhills-Thedford made a comeback bid as Bryan Zutavern scored on a 23-yard touchdown run as the score read 30-24. The Knights couldn’t get any closer.
Overton was led by Braden Kizer as he had 84 rushing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions on defense. Sandhills-Thedford was led by Cauy Pokorny had 18 carries, 117 yards rushing, and three total touchdowns.
Overton moves to the quarterfinals in Class D-2 State Playoffs and will face Mullen on Tuesday, November 6th. KRVN will carry the game. Sandhills-Thedford finishes the season at 8-2.
