OMAHA, Neb. — Senior guard Zach Jackson was named to the Preseason All-Summit First Team, the conference office announced Thursday. Preseason teams, as well as the league’s preseason poll, were tallied in a vote of the league’s head coaches, communications personnel and media.
Jackson, a second-team All-Summit selection as a junior, averaged 17.6 points, 6.4 rebounds 0.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game last season. He ranked fifth in the league for scoring and tallied in double figures in all but three games with 12 20-point performances and four double-doubles. He is the second-leading returning scorer among league players entering 2018-19, second only to Preseason Player of the Year Mike Daum.
South Dakota State was picked as the favorite to win the Summit League, garnering 34 first-place votes for 570 points. South Dakota was second and received one first-place vote for 470 points, while Denver earned one vote and 454 points for third. Purdue Fort Wayne came in fourth with 384 points, followed by North Dakota State, which had 280 points for fifth. Oral Roberts was sixth in the poll with 215 points, followed by North Dakota (186), Omaha (177) and Western Illinois (161).
Head coach Derrin Hansen enters his 14th season at the helm of the Omaha program and carries a career record of 206-188. The Mavericks return six letterwinners from the 2017-18 squad.
Omaha opens the 2018-19 season on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at Minnesota.
