OMAHA, Neb. — The Omaha volleyball team secured its first sweep of the season to open Summit League play Friday night, defeating South Dakota State 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-15) at Baxter Arena. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 4-10 (1-0 Summit League), while the Jackrabbits dropped to 2-12 (0-1).
Leaders for Omaha
Junior Abby Bergsten led the Mavericks with a season-high-tying 15 kills on a season-best .565 hitting efficiency. Junior Mackenzie Horkey recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 12 kills and 12 digs alongside two blocks.
Senior Sydney O’Shaughnessy put up a match-high 36 assists with nine digs and three aces, and freshman Claire Mountjoy tallied a match-high 14 scoops and two aces. Freshman Bella Sade paced the Mavericks at the net with five blocks.
Leaders for South Dakota State
Ashlynn Smith finished with a team-leading nine kills, while Makenzie Hennen had eight more. Mattison Munger totaled a team-high 15 assists.
Omaha outhit SDSU .289 to .051 and outblocked the Jacks 7-3.
Inside Set 1
Tied 7-7 early in the first set, Omaha broke past the Jackrabbits with a 4-0 run on a kill and an ace by O’Shaughnessy, a block by Sade and sophomore Meagen Roth and an SDSU attack error. Omaha then worked to a 19-10 lead, but SDSU got back-to-back kills from Smith as part of a 3-0 run. The Mavericks capped the set on a 6-2 spurt, and consecutive Mountjoy aces and a Bergsten kill punctuated it at 25-15.
Inside Set 2
Powered by five kills with .500 hitting from Bergsten, Omaha never trailed in the second set. Up 12-10, the Mavericks rattled off four straight scores with a Sade kill, an SDSU attacking miscue and back-to-back UNO stops at the net. Later, a kill from freshman Anna Blaschko and another SDSU attack error made it 20-13 and spurred a Jackrabbit timeout. Bergsten tallied a trio of kills to close the set, and her eighth of the night finished it off at 25-17.
Inside Set 3
The Mavericks rolled in the third set, hitting .452 as a team with just two attack errors. Bergsten was credited with seven kills and hit .700, while Horkey had another six kills on .750 hitting. Omaha led the entire game and held a 9-3 edge by SDSU’s first timeout, and by the Jacks’ second break, the Mavericks were up 20-11. Bergsten tallied two final kills late in the set, the second of which provided the final blow at 25-15 and sealed the match sweep.
Noting Tonight’s Match
-The victory marked Omaha’s second conference-opening win since joining the Summit League in 2012.
-Bergsten’s .565 attack percentage was the second-highest of any Maverick this season.
-SDSU’s .051 team hitting percentage was the lowest of any Maverick opponent in 2017.
