SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside College ran its win streak to three to begin the 2018-19 season, upending College of Saint Mary of Nebraska inside Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center Wednesday, Nov. 7.
While the home fans were treated to double-figure scoring from the top-notch trio of sophomore guard Sierra Mitchell (SO/Pleasant Hill, IA), junior forward Sydney Hupp (JR/O’Neill, NE) and junior guard Jordyn Moser (JR/Harlan, IA), the Mustangs’ bench play contributed plenty of positives. Freshman forward Sophia Peppers (FR/Exira, IA) turned many heads in the crowd, tallying 15 points which included hitting three treys and picking up three steals; sophomore guard Tayte Hansen (SO/York, NE) drained a pair of three-pointers and also forged a pair of steals; and senior forward Alex Gill totaled three points, three rebounds and three steals to support Hupp’s game-high 21 and a pair of 12-point efforts from Mitchell and Moser.
The road to an 82-62 victory didn’t come easy. Head coach Jamie Sale‘s squad needed a 10-1 run for a 20-11 advantage to close the first quarter to shake off a slow start. The nation’s number 11 ranked squad continued to build on the margin throughout the remaining three periods, opening it up to as much as 25 before finishing with the 20-point margin which marked their 10thsuccessive triumph in the all-time series against the Flames.
