Morningside Volleyball sweeps Mount Marty

Nationally ranked Morningside posted its highest kill and dig totals so far this season for a three-set match when the Mustangs broke into the win column in the GPAC standings with a 25-18, 25-16, 25-21 victory against Mount Marty on Thursday in Sioux City.

The Mustangs, ranked 24th in the first regular season NAIA poll, improved their record to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the GPAC. The Mustangs’ first two league contests were on the road against top 10 teams Dordt and Midland. Thursday’s win came in the Mustangs’ first home appearance of the season after starting the campaign with 14 consecutive matches on the road.

Morningside’s attack produced 49 kills and the Mustangs’ court coverage came up with 62 digs to help limit the Lancers to a paltry .056 hitting percentage.

The Mustangs featured a balanced attack as three players amassed double figure kill totals. Jayde Bergmann led the way with a match-high 14 kills for her team-high seventh double figure effort of the season. Brittni Olson was next with 11 kills and a match-high .375 hitting percentage. Emma Gerber was right behind with 10 kills, followed by Krista Zenk with six and Brittany Fleming with five.

Nikki Oberfoell sparkled on defense with a match-high 17 digs for her ninth consecutive double figure effort. Morgan Gourley also gave the Mustangs a solid defensive effort with 13 digs, while Morningside setter Callie Alberico just missed double figures with nine digs to go along with a match-high 42 assists.

Oberfoell, Fleming and Ashley Boer all had ace serves.

Gerber led the Mustangs’ blocking effort with four block assists.

Morningside will play at home again on Friday with a 6 p.m. match against Dakota State.
