The Morningside women’s volleyball team began its trip north to Madison, SD on Friday, Oct. 12, making a stop at Dakota State University for a non-conference match with the Trojans. The Mustangs topped the Trojans in straight sets, 25-22, 25-21, and 25-20.

Morningside’s attackers completed 38 kills on the night, led by Sophomore Krista Zenk with 16 kills on 40 attempts. Junior Emma Gerber tallied nine kills, while sophomore Caitlin Makovicka contributed eight kills. Zenk’s 16 kills were enough to lead all players in the contest. The Mustangs’ junior setter, Callie Alberico, totaled 32 assists in the match.

“DSU is a much improved program,” remarked Morningside Head Coach Beth Donnelly after the match. “Our overall game is getting better daily we just need to stop allowing our unforced errors to create long runs of points for our opponents. Two different times tonight, we allowed the Trojans to go on 4-5 point runs. We are not going to get away with that in the GPAC.”

Morningside racked up 63 digs across the three sets, led by freshman libero Kayla Harris, with 22. Krista Zenk notched 17 in the match. Harris’ total claimed top marks on the night.

The Mustangs totaled nine blocks on the night, highlighted by solo blocks from Emma Gerber and freshman Lauren Rohwer.

Morningside wraps up this weekend’s road trip with a 5:00 p.m. match at the University of Jamestown on Saturday, Oct. 13.
