PONCA – The 2-0 Oakland-Craig Knight traveled to Ponca for a matchup with the 1-1 Indians on Friday, Sept. 7, in a game heard on 107.9 The Bull.

The Knights asserted themselves early, scoring on their first three offensive possessions of the game, a 10-yard run and a one-yard run by Robby Mayberry, and a nine-yard run by Jefferson McNeill. Oakland-Craig led 20-0 early in the second quarter.

Ponca finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter on a 10-yard pass from Evan Anderson to Carter Kingsbury, and the score was now 20-6.

The Knights were able to drive down to the Ponca seven yard line where they were forced to attempt a field goal. Jake Pille’s kick from 24 yards out was good and Oakland-Craig now led 23-6.

The Indians marched 63 yards on their next drive and capped things off with an eight-yard run by Gage McGill. The two point conversion was good, and Oakland-Craig led 23-14 at halftime.

Both teams would score once more in the game. Mayberry earned his third rushing touchdown of the night with 2:01 left in the third quarter, this one from three yards out. The Knights led 30-14 after three.

Ponca scored for the last time on an eight-yard pass from Anderson to McGill with 3:01 left. The two point conversion was no good, making the score 30-20 still in favor of the Knights.

Oakland-Craig was forced to punt with 2:28 left in the game. Ponca got down to the O-C 29 yard line, but the Knights’ defense held on fourth down, securing the 30-20 victory.

Mayberry ended the game with 126 yards rushing and three touchdowns for the Knights.

Oakland-Craig improves to 3-0 with the win and will host Syracuse next Friday. Ponca falls to 1-2 on the season and travels to Aquinas Catholic.
