ISU Drops Cyclone Classic Finale to Syracuse

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 3-2 (18-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-9) loss to Syracuse Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. ISU is now 7-6 on the season, while the Orange improved to 4-4.

Iowa State was led by 19 kills and a career-best 25 digs from Jess Schaben, while Josie Herbst also had a career-best 13 kills. Grace Lazard posted 11. Hali Hillegas had 11 digs. Candelaria Herrera’s second start as a Cyclone saw her earn nine kills at .389 hitting and tied a career-best with nine blocks.

First Set: Iowa State 25 Syracuse 18
The Cyclone serve hampered the home team’s effort early, as four service errors allowed Syracuse to stay ahead. Jess Schaben went behind the line to use her short serve to post a 4-0 run to put ISU ahead 11-9. The set was knotted at 14-14, but Iowa State went on a 7-1 run to move ahead for good at 21-15. The Cyclones rode a balanced effort, hitting .355 as a team, while holding the Orange to a .029 hitting clip. ISU moved ahead 1-0 when Josie Herbst got her third kill of the set at 25-18.

Second Set: Iowa State 25 Syracuse 16
While the ISU offense continued to click, the serve hampered ISU, allowing the Orange to stay within arm’s reach. Iowa State broke out of it with a 4-0 run to move ahead at 11-7. The Cyclone offense dominated proceedings in the frame, hitting a .397 led by a seven-kill set from Jess Schaben, while Herbst chipped in five kills. The Cyclones moved ahead 2-0 on a Candelaria Herrera kill at 25-16.

Third Set: Syracuse 25 Iowa State 22
Syracuse found some form in its offense, and was able to build a lead at 12-10. The Cyclone offense was still rolling, as ISU moved back ahead at 14-13 on a Piper Mauck dump kill. The Cyclones got ahead at 19-16, but the Orange were able to battle back and move ahead at 21-20 on a Santita Ebangwese kill. It was part of a 6-0 run which got Cuse to set point at 24-20. Syracuse pulled a set back when Grace Lazard’s shot went wide at 25-22.

Fourth set: Syracuse 25 Iowa State 21
The Cyclone block helped break ISU out of an early-set hole, as three blocks helped push Iowa State ahead 7-6. Syracuse responded with a 5-0 run to move back ahead 14-11. ISU worked its way back into the set to bring the Orange within one on multiple occasions. Eventually, Cuse was able to go on a 3-0 run to pull ahead 22-18, and made it to set point at 24-18. Taylor Baranski’s serve held off three set points, but the Orange eventually forced a fifth set when Ebangwese got a kill at 25-21.

Fifth Set: Syracuse 15 Iowa State 9
The Orange got the early edge in the deciding frame, as a 4-0 run put them ahead 6-3. An Ebangwese ace put Cuse ahead 8-5 at the switch, and got ahead four when Herbst was denied by Amber Witherspoon and Mariia Levanova at 10-6. The Syracuse attack dominated the frame, as they hit .733 as a team in the set. The Orange had match point at 14-8, and ended it with a kill from Ebangwese at 15-9.
