AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Brianna Weilbacher was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week today after a dominant weekend at the Osprey Classic in Jacksonville, Fla. The native of Columbia, Ill., led Iowa State to a pair of wins, and had one of the best weekends of her collegiate career. This is the first Big 12 weekly award of Weilbacher’s career.
Weilbacher opened the tournament with a complete game shutout of Virginia Tech, going 7.0 innings while giving up no runs and just five hits. She also rang-up a season-high 10 strikeouts in Iowa State’s 2-0 victory over the Hokies. it was her third complete game shutout of the season.
She was back in the circle on Sunday for the tournament finale vs. Jacksonville. Weilbacher was nearly flawless once again in leading Iowa State to a 3-2 extra-inning victory. She gave up no earned runs on just two hits in 7.1 innings with another 10-strikeout performance. Weilbacher exited the game with ISU leading 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, just one out from victory and re-entered in the bottom of the eighth with one out, JU runners on the corners, and ISU clinging to a 3-2 advantage. She came up huge once again, ending the game with a strikeout to record her first save of the season in unconventional fashion.
On the weekend, Weilbacher recorded a 0.00 ERA in 15.0 innings pitched. She also led the Big 12 in strikeouts per seven innings at 10.27 while allowing a .154 opponent batting average.
