The Longhorns started off hot on an otherwise chilly day at the Cyclone Sports Complex, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Three consecutive walks to open the game loaded the bases, followed by a two-RBI double for Taylor Ellsworth. An additional run scored on an RBI single by Kaitlyn Washington.
Ellsworth was at it again in the top of the second with another RBI double, extending UT’s lead to 4-0.
Nychole Antillon helped Iowa State respond in the home half of the second. Following a lead-off single for Taylor Nearad, Antillon crushed a two-run shot to left center off of Texas starting pitcher Brooke Bolinger, cutting the deficit to 4-2. It was Antillon’s third home run of the season.
Texas scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings, including a solo home run by Washington in the fifth.
The Cyclones capitalized on a Longhorn error in the bottom of the fifth, as Kaylee Bosworth reached first on the UT miscue, while Sami Williams and Sydney Stites raced home, making the score 6-4 in favor of the Longhorns. Schaben then provided Iowa State another spark, crushing her second home run of the season on a solo shot to center field in the bottom of the sixth, making it a one-run game.
However, Texas answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh, including an RBI double by Paige von Sprecken, and UT held on for an 8-5 victory.
The Cyclones and Longhorns will play a doubleheader on Friday at the Cyclone Sports Complex to wrap up the series. First pitch on Friday is set for 12:30 p.m.
