Iowa State rallies to down K-State

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State battled hard and prevailed over Kansas State 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 26-24, 25-15) Friday night at Hilton Coliseum. The win put ISU over .500 again at 12-11 and 5-5 in Big 12 play. K-State is now 12-9 overall, 2-8 in league play.

The Cyclones hit .307 as a team and recorded 11.0 total blocks on the night. Grace Lazard had a career night, finishing with a career-best-tying 17 kills at .500 hitting and seven total blocks (two solo, five assists). Jess Schaben had a double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs. In the back row, Izzy Enna posted a career-best 19 digs, while Hali Hillegas had 13 and Taylor Baranski 10.

Set One: Iowa State 25 Kansas State 15
Izzy Enna’s trip behind the service line resulted in a 7-0 run which broke a 3-3 tie into a 10-3 advantage. The K-State defense worked hard to stay in the set, but they could not find enough answers for a Cyclone attack which hit .333 in the set. The ISU block also did its part, posting 4.0 total blocks with Eleanor Holthaus contributing to three of them. The Cyclones wrapped up the first when Grace Lazard tipped an overpass into the vacant space in the K-State backcourt at 25-15.

Set Two: Kansas State 25 Iowa State 21
The Cyclones got off to a slow start with the defense taking time to settle into the frame. However, the ISU offense continued to fire with Lazard and Candelaria Herrera doing the damage. The Cyclones would rally, with Enna behind the service line and Holthaus at the net guiding a 4-0 run to put the home team back ahead 12-11. The Cats were persistent and went on a 3-0 run to get ahead for good at 21-18. The Wildcats hit .324 as a team, only committing a pair of attacking errors, en route to evening the match. K-State wrapped up the second when Lazard was stuffed by Gloria Mutiri at 25-21.

Set Three: Iowa State 26 Kansas State 24
Both offenses put up strong numbers and kept the serve rotating, with neither team getting a lead of more than two points for the majority of the set. The first team to run-off three-straight points were the home Cyclones, with Piper Mauck keying the effort with a block of Kylee Zumach and a kill to push ISU ahead 19-17. ISU moved ahead by three at 22-19 when Herrera and Holthaus combined for a block, but K-State went on a 5-0 run to reach set point first at 24-22. Josie Herbst went behind the service line and got a 3-0 run to get the Cyclones to set point at 25-24, which ISU converted on first asking when Jess Schaben killed at 26-24.

Set Four: Iowa State 25 Kansas State 15
K-State roared out to a 4-0 lead to begin the set, but ISU immediately countered with Hali Hillegas serving up a 6-0 run to put the Cyclones back in front 6-4. Lazard featured prominently in the ISU run, getting three kills and a block. K-State brought ISU back within one on a couple of occasions, but the Cyclones advanced ahead by five at 15-10 on a Holthaus kill. It was all Iowa State from there, as the Cyclones hit .378 as a team and had 4.0 total blocks to hold KSU to .089 hitting. ISU wrapped up the match when Herbst got her 13th kill of the night at 25-15.

Player of the Match
Grace Lazard. Few times has a Cyclone taken over a match quite like Lazard did in the fourth. The senior finished with 17 kills, tying her career-best set three weeks ago in Manhattan, at .500 hitting. Lazard also led ISU with seven blocks (two solo, five assists). In the fourth set alone, the Londoner had seven kills at .700 and four blocks (one solo, three assists).

Up Next
Iowa State has a mid-week open date before returning to action next Saturday at TCU. First serve between the Cyclones and Horned Frogs will begin at 11 a.m.
