Cyclones Rebound With Sweep of K-State

AMES, Iowa – No. 23 Iowa State returned to winning form on Wednesday with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 27-25) sweep of Kansas State Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. The win improves ISU to 12-3 overall on the season, 3-2 in league play. K-State is now 9-10 on the year and 2-4 in Big 12 action.

The Cyclone defense stifled the Cats, holding K-State to a .015 hitting percentage and just 23 kills on the night. The ISU attack was led by Samara West‘s 13 kills at a .414 hitting percentage and Grace Lazard‘s 11 kills. Four Cyclones had at least 10 digs, with Hali Hillegas leading the way at 22 while Jess Schaben had 18, Monique Harris 17 and Alexis Conaway 11.

Set One: Iowa State 25 Kansas State 12
Iowa State roared ahead early, claiming eight of the first nine points of the match and never looking back. The Cyclone defense locked down KSU to a .025 hitting percentage, with ISU posted 27 digs in the frame. Grace Lazard paced the attack with six kills as ISU build the lead into the double figures. Lazard’s sixth kill locked up the set at 25-12 ISU.

Set Two: Iowa State 25 Kansas State 16
Again, ISU pushed ahead quickly, building a 4-0 run on Izzy Enna‘s serve to get ahead 9-3. The Cyclone defense went better in the second, recording 6.5 total blocks to hold the visitors to a -.140 hitting percentage on the frame, with just five kills. ISU got to set point on a 5-0 run powered by Genesis Miranda‘s serve and took the second when Bryna Vogel hit a shot wide at 25-16.

Set Three: Iowa State 27 Kansas State 25
The Wildcats shuffled the lineup and it paid off early as K-State got the first four points of the set. The Cyclones tied it back up at 11-11 on an Avery Rhodes kill, and went on from there to get ahead 18-14. However, Kansas State took advantage of some sloppy ISU play to go on a 6-0 run, powered by five Iowa State attack errors to get back ahead 20-18. The Cats got to set point at 24-23, but were fought off. ISU wrapped up the match on the second match point as Samara West posted consecutive kills to close out the night.

Player of the Game
Samara West. After one of the worst matches of her ISU career against Baylor last week, West responded in a big way on Wednesday. The redshirt senior finished with 13 kills at a .414 hitting percentage, a season-high six digs and five blocks.
