NEW YORK, N.Y. — Creighton sophomore Brittany Witt has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this fall. Witt was previously honored on September 12th.
Witt averaged 4.00 digs and 1.75 assists per set while helping Creighton win a pair of matches to open BIG EAST play. Witt also had two kills in as many attempts. The Omaha native opened her week with a season-best 20 digs in CU’s 3-1 win over Georgetown. She added two assists and a kill in the victory as CU held the Hoyas to .179 hitting.
On Sunday, Witt had 12 digs to go with a career-best 12 assists to procure her first career double-double. Witt added another kill and also served up her team-best 15th ace of the fall. Creighton’s defense held Villanova to .122 hitting on the afternoon.
Witt’s teammate Megan Ballenger was also named to the league’s weekly Honor Roll. Ballenger did a little bit of everything, averaging 2.38 kills, 3.00 assists, 1.50 digs and 0.38 blocks per set. The sophomore hit .295 in 44 swings during the week.
Normally a middle blocker or right-side hitter, Ballenger started at setter for the first time as a collegian and had 23 assists, eight kills and four digs in a win over Georgetown on Friday. Creighton hit .446 in the match, the best mark in program history for a four-set match.
Ballenger returned to her usual position on Sunday and finished with 11 kills, eight digs, two blocks and one assist on .269 hitting in a 3-1 win over Villanova.
Creighton (9-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) plays a pair of road matches this week, starting with a 6 p.m. Central match on Friday at Seton Hall that will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
Marquette’s Jenna Rosenthal and Providence’s Allison Barber were named the BIG EAST’s Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively.
