OMAHA, Neb. — The Creighton softball team defeated Nebraska-Omaha, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Westside Field at Westbrook.
The Bluejays improved to 15-18, while the Mavericks fell to 4-36.
Kiara Mills provided the go-ahead RBIs with her team-leading seventh homer of the season during the top of the fifth inning.
The Mavericks took the lead because of an error in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, UNO laid down a bunt in front of home plate before the ball ended up at the backstop because of an errant throw, allowing a pair of runners to score on the play.
Neither team scored during the third or fourth innings before Creighton put its lead-off hitter on during the fifth as Victoria Alvarez drew a four-pitch walk and the Bluejays ended the inning by scoring three runs to take the lead. Sam Alm sent Alvarez to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Jayci Foster drove in Alvarez with a two-out RBI single into left-center field to tie the game at 2-2. Mills followed Foster with her team-leading seventh home run of the season off the top of the center-field wall and gave Creighton a 4-2 lead.
The Bluejays added a run in the seventh with an error. Alm walked before Foster sent a ground ball to third base with two out. UNO’s third baseman launched the ball towards first base before it ended up down the right-field line and allowed Alm to score.
Bluejay starting pitcher Logan Black pitched five innings and struck out six while walking two, allowing five hits and two unearned runs. Kiele Miller recorded her first save of the season by striking out five and allowing one base runner during two innings of relief work.
Mills led the Creighton offense by going 2-for-4 with two-RBIs from her fifth-inning homer.
Creighton resumes BIG EAST play on Friday against Butler. The Bluejays and Bulldogs will play a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at the Creighton Sports Complex.
