COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Creighton softball team fell 4-3 against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday afternoon at the Mizzou Softball Tournament.
The Bluejays fell to 7-3, while the Lady Lions improved to 10-5.
Southeastern Louisiana opened the game with a line-drive home run to right-center field by Mahalia Gibson during the top of the first.
Creighton responded with a run-scoring single to tie the game. Ashley Cantu led off the bottom of the first frame with a single and reached third base after a sacrifice bunt and single. Hope Moreno delivered with a single through the left side to drive in Cantu for the Bluejays’ first run of the game.
The Jays loaded the bases with a walk, but a pop out and strikeout ended the threat.
Neither team scored during the second or third innings before the Lady Lions scored twice during the top of the fourth frame.
Similar to the opening inning, Creighton responded during the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.
Cantu drove in one with a sacrifice fly to center field and Sam Crowley drove in the third Bluejay run of the game with a bunt single. Crowley’s bunt landed in front of the pitcher’s circle but after the pitcher fielded the ball no one stood near the first base bag to record the out, allowing Crowley to reach safely and Jayci McGill to score from third base and tie the game, 3-3.
The Lady Lions regained the advantage with a double, single and wild pitch during the top of the sixth. With runners at second and third, a pitch in the dirt scampered towards the first-base side of the back stop, allowing the go-ahead run cross home safely.
Southeastern Louisiana still had a runner at third base with only one out, but Bluejay reliever Kiele Miller struck out one and Kelli Finan recorded a sliding catch down the left-field line for the third out of the frame.
The Bluejays looked poised to respond during the bottom of the sixth as Tash Coffiel led off the bottom half of the sixth with a single through the right side. After Cantu tallied the first out by being called out for being out of the batter’s box on her attempted slap, Crowley laid down a bunt in front of home plate and ended up reaching second base after a miss-throw. Crowley beat the race to first base, and an errant throw allowed her to reach second and Coffiel to reach third.
After a strikeout, Southeastern Louisiana caught Coffiel between third and home after a wild pitch to end the inning with the Lady Lions still leading by a run.
Miller put up a zero during the top of the seventh, giving the Bluejays a chance during the bottom of the final frame. Nikki McNeil was hit by the pitch with one out to give Creighton a chance, but the Lions escaped the inning with a fly out to left-center field.
Crowley led the Bluejays with a 2-for-3 performance and an RBI, while the rest of the lineup produced six additional hits.
Creighton returns to action at the Mizzou Tournament on Saturday. The Bluejays will play Missouri at 2 p.m. before facing Drake at 5:30 p.m.
