Creighton Softball concludes year with win over Seton Hall

OMAHA, Neb. — The Creighton softball team concluded its 2019 season with a 9-7 victory against Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex. The win pushed the Bluejays’ final record to 20-24 overall and 8-13 during BIG EAST play.

Sam Alm, Kiara Mills and Mikaela Pechar each hit two-run homers as Creighton tallied its highest run total since April 9 against Nebraska (9-1 victory).

The Bluejays jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with consecutive hits during the home half of the first inning. Ashley Cantu led off the frame with a triple to the center-field wall before Alm lifted her first career home run over the left-field wall.

Seton Hall cut into Creighton’s edge with a solo homer in the second and gained the lead with a pair of long balls in the third, including a go-ahead three-run homer to give the Pirates a 5-2 advantage.

The Bluejays quickly trimmed their deficit to a single run in the bottom of the third behind the power of Mills’ team-leading 11th home run of the year. Kailey Wilson delivered a two-out single and Mills cleared the wall in center field on the next pitch.

Pechar joined the home run party with a two-run homer to right in the fourth. Jayci Foster opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelli Finan. Pechar fouled off three pitches in her at-bat before lifting her fourth home run of the year over the right-field wall and gave Creighton a 6-5 lead.

The Pirates hit their fourth homer of the game during the top of the fifth to knot the game at 6-6, but the Bluejays responded with three in the bottom of the inning.

Kailey Wilson doubled to lead off the home half of the fifth frame before Mileah McKelvy delivered the go-ahead RBI with a single up the middle to drive in pinch-runner Sydney Jenkins from third base.

Finan and Pechar recorded consecutive RBI singles to push Creighton’s lead to 9-6.

Seton Hall scored one in the sixth with a pair of singles but left one on base as McKelvy made a diving catch in right field to end the inning.

Senior Laura Roecker recorded her 10th victory of the season by inducing three consecutive ground outs during the top of the seventh.

Roecker pitched 4.2 innings of relief and struck out three batters while allowing five hits and two earned runs during her final collegiate appearance

Wilson led the Creighton offense by going 3-for-4, while Pechar finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Foster scored twice and drew a pair of walks during her final game as a Bluejay and Finan went 1-for-2 with a RBI and sacrifice hit in her final contest in a Creighton uniform.
