Briar Cliff Softball loses doubleheader to Northwestern

The Briar Cliff softball team dropped both games of Thursday’s GPAC doubleheader at Bishop Mueller Field with Northwestern winning by scores of 6-0 and 9-6. The losses dropped the Chargers to 4-17 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC, while the Red Raiders improved to 18-5 overall and 5-1 in league play.

In game one, Northwestern got on the board early with a homerun in the top of the first inning to go up 1-0. The Red Raiders then did the rest of their damage in the top of the fourth, scoring five times in route to the 6-0 win. Northwestern outhit the Cliff 5-1 in the game and the Chargers had four errors compared to one miscue by the Red Raiders.

Kayla Tindall pitched a complete game one-hitter for the Red Raiders in the win, while Summer Williams suffered the loss for BC. Williams tossed 3.1 innings and had two strikeouts and Lanae Shiley pitched in relief for 3.2 innings with three K’s. Codie Fineran had the lone hit of the game for the Blue & Gold.

In game two, Northwestern led 8-0 after the fourth frame, notching three runs in the opening inning, four runs in the third and one in the fourth. Briar Cliff exploded for five runs in the fifth inning and brought the score to 8-5 going into the sixth. During the fifth inning, Isabella Gonzalez and Nicole Romero scored off a Brooke French single, Brenna Oliver tripled down the right field line to drive home both Madison Deane and Bailey Nichols and Oliver crossed home plate after a Shiley single. The Red Raiders added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 9-5. Romero cut Northwestern’s lead down to 9-6 when she scored off a Deane single in the bottom of the sixth inning before both teams went scoreless in the seventh inning. The Red Raiders held on and won by a final tally of 9-6.

The Chargers were outhit 14-8 in game two and Oliver paced the Cliff with two hits. Shiley, Gonzalez, Romero, Deane, French and Nichols all contributed one hit apiece. Oliver and French shared the team lead in RBI with two each, trailed by Shiley and Deane both with one RBI. Romero crossed home plate on two occasions, while Oliver, Gonzalez, Deane and Nichols each scored one run. Gonzalez suffered the pitching loss after fanning two batters. Emma Schnell pitched the entire game for Northwestern and struck out three batters to earn the W.

Briar Cliff will now be off until Monday when it travels to Seward, Nebraska for a doubleheader against Concordia. Game one between the Chargers and Bulldogs is slated for 5 p.m.
