The Briar Cliff softball team split its final two games of the team’s spring trip in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with the Cliff defeating Ohio Christian 5-3 and falling to Walsh 6-0. The Chargers are now 3-12 overall this season.
The game against Ohio Christian saw Briar Cliff fall behind 1-0 in the first inning before tying the game in the second at 1-1 when Isabella Gonzalez doubled to left field to score Summer Williams. The Trailblazers would temporarily take the lead back in the third with one run to go up 2-1 before the Chargers went up for good, exploding for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Madison Deane got the scoring going for BC in the inning with a double to bring home Danielle Ullman to tie the game at 2-2. Bailey Nichols then reached on an error to allow Gonzalez to score and Deane scored on another error by Ohio Christian. The Chargers would tack on another run in the fifth inning when Williams grounded out to second base but Codie Fineran cross the plate on the play. Briar Cliff would then hold Ohio Christian to one run the rest of the way to grab the 5-3 victory.
The Chargers piled up nine hits in the game with Fineran leading the team with three and Gonzalez added two hits. Williams, Bailee Meyer, Deane and Nichols all had one hit. Gonzalez, Williams and Lanae Shiley all saw action at pitcher for the Blue & Gold in the game with Gonzalez and Williams both pitching 3.0 innings and Shiley threw one inning. Shiley had one strikeout for the Cliff.
In game two, the Charger offense stalled with four hits and eight runners left on base the 6-0 loss to NCAA Division II Walsh. The Cavaliers also outhit the Chargers 12-5. Walsh took an early 1-0 lead in the first before scoring once in the fourth and fifth innings and three more runs in the seventh for the 6-0 win. Rachele Heaton, Nicole Romero, Gonzalez and Nichols all had one hit apiece. Shiley pitched the majority of the game with three K’s in 4.1 innings of work. Abbygail Lint and Gonzalez also pitched for BC and Lint had one strikeout.
Briar Cliff will be on the road next Wednesday, visiting Waldorf in a non-conference doubleheader with game one set for 3 p.m.
