The Briar Cliff softball team lost both games of Monday’s GPAC doubleheader against Concordia in Seward, Nebraska with the host Bulldogs winning game one 8-2 and game two 6-0. The losses forced Briar Cliff to 4-19 overall and 1-5 in the GPAC, while Concordia climbed to 15-12 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Concordia controlled game one from the opening inning, scoring once in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0. The Bulldogs then tacked on four more runs in the third to go up 5-0. The Chargers got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Brooke French grounded into a double play but Nicole Romero was able to score to make the score 5-1 in favor of Concordia. The Bulldogs answered with a run of their own in the fifth and two more in the sixth to go up 8-1 before BC scored one run in the top of the seventh when Romero hit a solo homer to make the final score 8-2. Concordia had an 8-6 edge in hits in the game and neither team commited an error.
Romero accounted for two of the team’s six hits, followed by Brenna Oliver, Lanae Shiley, French and Bailey Nichols all with one hit. Romero also scored both runs for BC. Isabella Gonzalez and Shiley shared pitching duties in the game with Gonzalez suffering the loss and striking out two batters. Shiley notched four K’s in her 4.0 innings of work.
The Charger bats went cold in game two with only four hits and zero runs scored. The Bulldogs had three runs in the fourth and added three more in the sixth for the 6-0 victory. Concordia also had 10 hits and two errors, compared to one error by the Cliff.
Rachele Heaton, Summer Williams, Romero and Codie Fineran all had one hit for the Blue & Gold in the game. Williams, Abbygail Lint and Shiley all saw action at pitcher with Williams being tagged with the L. Lint had one strikeout for the Charger pitching staff.
Briar Cliff will host No. 25 Morningside on Wednesday afternoon at Bishop Mueller Field. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
